Have you ever done this?
We’re less than a week away from Christmas. And I’ve been in this business long enough to know that even if you don’t celebrate Christmas, you “celebrate” Christmas (I’m thinking about those cookies you grab each time you pass Janice’s desk).
When we’re in the midst of the holidays we develop this “never again” mentality.
I also see this same mentality when a new client or challenge participant is getting ready to start training with us at Performance Fitness.
They’re nervous but excited to see some results.
It’s maybe Thursday, and they’re getting started on Monday. We take their weight and measurements, congratulate them on their commitment, high five them, and send them on their way until Monday.
Monday they show up bloated with low energy and 3 pounds heavier.
Why, you ask?
Because they literally binged on all of their favorite and soon-to-be “forbidden” foods.
The same thing happens over the holidays when people have a “the diet starts January 1st or 2nd mentality”.
No joke.
I’ve seen people create huge setbacks for themselves in the name of not being able to have what they love ever again.
Honestly, if you approach any workout or nutrition plan with that mentality, you will fail. It’s that simple.
It’s a harsh truth, but it needs to be told.
No food will ever be off limits. You live in an abundant society where food isn’t scarce, and anything you want can be yours at any time.
You can have your favorite treats (especially if you know how to make them) any time of the year.
There is no all or none in health and fitness.
It can be as simple as smaller portions, decreased frequency of consumption, or preparing healthier alternatives to your favorite foods.
But there is never a reason to believe that you’re going to have to say goodbye to pizza and ice cream and Christmas Cookies forever.
So, have you ever approached a fitness program with this mentality of “never again?”
What was the outcome? Post a comment and let me know!
